PocketGuard alternatives. Four honest picks.

Written by the team that makes Pockita, one of the picks below. Where another app is the better fit, we say so.
PocketGuard’s main idea is one number for what is safe to spend. If you want to keep that simplicity, the switch depends on what you will pay for. Free with manual entry: EveryDollar or Goodbudget. Bank sync at a similar yearly price: Quicken Simplifi. Quick phone logging with no bank connection: Pockita.
Try Pockita free for 7 days, then $9.99 a month. Or pay $39.99 once for lifetime access.
Why people look for a PocketGuard alternative
The free version is easy to miss. PocketGuard leads with a 7-day trial, and its pricing page shows paid plans only, though its help center describes a basic version with up to 2 category budgets. The Penny Hoarder, in a review updated in June 2026, said PocketGuard offered it only a free trial at first, and that the free version caps linked accounts and budget categories at two each.
PocketGuard’s prices have gone up. An archived copy of its pricing page from December 2023 shows a yearly plan at less than half of today’s $74.99, and an April 2024 copy already shows today’s $74.99 and $12.99. A lifetime price of $149.99 now appears on the pricing page, but its FAQ says some customers “may find a unique lifetime offer”, and the App Store listing shows no in-app purchase at that price.
Bank sync can fail. A PocketGuard help article updated on September 3, 2026 lists 14 institutions with technical issues: American Express Personal Savings, HSBC, Marcus by Goldman Sachs, Synchrony Bank, PayPal and nine Canadian ones. It says its data providers are working on them but gives no estimate for a fix. Pockita and the free plans of EveryDollar and Goodbudget have no bank connection to break.
What PocketGuard does well
PocketGuard does one thing clearly, and plenty of people should stay. If its Leftover number, the one figure for what is safe to spend, is why you use it, most alternatives will feel like a step down. At standard prices, its yearly plan, at $74.99, also costs less than the yearly plans of EveryDollar, Goodbudget and Quicken Simplifi.
- One safe-to-spend number worked out after bills, budgets, goals and debts
- Finding bills and subscriptions automatically once a bank is linked
- A built-in debt payoff plan on the paid plan

The picks
Pockita
Pick it if you want to log spending in seconds on your phone and never connect a bank.
Pockita never connects to a bank, so there is nothing to reconnect and no bank login to hand over. You log spending by voice, receipt or a few taps, set a monthly limit for each category, and add recurring items such as rent and subscriptions yourself. You give up automatic sync, PocketGuard’s Leftover figure and debt payoff plan, a web version, shared budgets and importing your PocketGuard data. Pockita has no free plan: it is $9.99 a month after a 7-day free trial, or $39.99 once for lifetime access.
EveryDollar
Pick it if you want a free zero-based budget and are happy typing transactions in.
EveryDollar is the free route if you will enter transactions by hand. Its free version has unlimited budget categories, where PocketGuard’s basic version allows up to 2 category budgets. Premium adds bank sync and a debt payoff tracker, at $17.99 a month or $79.99 a year (after a 14-day free trial for new users), which is more than PocketGuard on either plan. The method is zero-based, so every dollar gets a plan before the month starts, and a partner can sign in with their own email.
Goodbudget
Pick it if you like the envelope method and want a free plan you can share.
Goodbudget uses envelopes and has a free plan with 20 envelopes, 1 account and 2 devices. The paid plan is $10 a month or $80 a year and adds automatic bank sync for US banks. Like PocketGuard, it shares a budget through one login used on each device, not a separate login for each person.
Quicken Simplifi
Pick it if you want automatic bank sync at a low yearly price.
Simplifi is the closest in idea. It keeps bank sync and shows how much you have left to spend per day for the rest of the month, worked out automatically. It is billed yearly on Quicken’s site, and at standard prices its $83.88 a year is a little more than PocketGuard’s $74.99. Like PocketGuard, it is built around bank connections. There is no free trial, but Quicken refunds a subscription bought directly from it within 30 days. You can share it with one other person, though they currently have to sign in on the web app.

Switching from PocketGuard to Pockita
- While PocketGuard Plus (called Premium on its pricing page) is active, export your transactions to a CSV file so you keep a record. The FAQ below has the steps. Pockita starts fresh rather than importing it.
- Pick a start date, ideally the first of a month, and log forward from there.
- Set monthly limits for the 8 to 15 categories you actually look at, and add your recurring bills and subscriptions yourself, because Pockita does not find them for you.
- Run both apps for a week and compare the totals. Then cancel PocketGuard Plus. In the mobile app, open the sidebar, scroll down, tap Billing and choose Modify subscription. If you bought it on the web, open Settings in the web app, click Customer Portal and choose Cancel plan. PocketGuard says subscriptions renew automatically unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best PocketGuard alternative?
It depends on what you want to keep. PocketGuard’s idea is one safe-to-spend figure, which it calls Leftover and works out from your connected accounts. Quicken Simplifi is the closest match: it keeps bank sync and shows what you have left to spend per day, and at standard prices its yearly plan is a little above PocketGuard’s. For a free version with manual entry, EveryDollar or Goodbudget. For quick phone logging with no bank connection, Pockita. Pockita, EveryDollar’s free version and Goodbudget’s free plan do not work from synced accounts, so if Leftover is why you use PocketGuard, staying may be the better call.
Is there a free alternative to PocketGuard?
Yes, two of the four picks have one. EveryDollar has a free version with manual entry, and bank sync is on Premium at $17.99 a month or $79.99 a year after a 14-day free trial for new users. Goodbudget has a free plan with 20 envelopes, 1 account and 2 devices, and bank sync is on its paid plan. Quicken Simplifi is paid, with no free trial. Pockita is paid too: $9.99 a month after a 7-day free trial, or $39.99 once for lifetime access. PocketGuard itself is unclear about its own free plan: its pricing page offers a 7-day trial and paid plans, while its help center says the basic version allows up to 2 category budgets and its Google Play listing says core features are free.
Is there a PocketGuard alternative that works without bank sync?
Yes. Pockita never connects to a bank: you add spending by voice, receipt or a few taps. EveryDollar’s free version and Goodbudget’s free plan also work by manual entry, and bank sync is a paid feature in both. PocketGuard can be used by hand too, since its Google Play listing says you can add transactions manually, but it works out Leftover by analyzing your connected accounts.
Which PocketGuard alternative costs the least?
The free plans of EveryDollar and Goodbudget cost nothing if you enter transactions yourself. Among paid options at standard prices, PocketGuard’s yearly plan is $74.99, which is already below EveryDollar Premium at $79.99, Goodbudget at $80 and Quicken Simplifi at $83.88. Of the four picks, only the two free plans and Pockita’s lifetime price come in below it. Paid monthly, Pockita ($9.99) and Goodbudget ($10) cost less than PocketGuard’s $12.99, and EveryDollar Premium ($17.99) costs more. Paid monthly for a year, Pockita costs more than PocketGuard’s yearly plan, but its lifetime price, $39.99 once, is less than one year of PocketGuard. PocketGuard also lists a lifetime price of $149.99, though it may not be offered to every customer.
Can I move my PocketGuard data to another app?
PocketGuard exports your transactions as a CSV file. Open Transactions, tap the download icon in the upper right corner and choose Export transactions, or choose Export transactions in the sidebar. PocketGuard emails you a link that works for 24 hours, and the file covers all your linked accounts. It lists transaction export among its Plus features, so export before you cancel. Whether another app can import the file depends on that app. Pockita does not import data, so the simplest way to switch is to start fresh from the first of a month.
