YNAB alternatives

YNAB alternatives. Four honest picks.

Written by the team that makes Pockita, one of the picks below. Where another app is the better fit, we say so.

The short answer

If YNAB’s method started to feel like a second job, the right switch depends on what you want to keep. Keep the envelopes for less: Goodbudget. Keep zero-based budgeting with a free option: EveryDollar. Keep bank sync and a dashboard: Monarch Money. Want quick phone logging with no method to learn: Pockita.

Try Pockita free for 7 days, then $9.99 a month. Or pay $39.99 once for lifetime access.

Why people look for a YNAB alternative

YNAB costs $14.99 a month or $109 a year. An archived copy of its pricing page from May 2024 lists a lower yearly price than today’s and the same monthly price. Fortune wrote in February 2025 that the subscription rate had increased regularly over the years. That is worth weighing if you open the app less than you used to.

YNAB has also changed a lot lately. In May 2025 it replaced the word budget with plan across web, iOS and Android. In September 2025 it remodeled its phone apps around new Home and Spending tabs with a fresh visual design, and in June 2026 it gave the iOS transaction editor a new look. If you learned YNAB before then, parts of it now live somewhere else.

The method also asks for a routine. YNAB’s blog post The Five-Minute YNAB Routine suggests a daily check-in, a weekly or payday session that includes reconciling your spending, saving and credit card accounts, and extra steps at the turn of each month. YNAB’s get-started guide budgets about 20 to 30 minutes for setup. If YNAB has begun to feel like a chore, that routine is the first thing to look at.

What YNAB does well

YNAB has helped a lot of people out of debt, and if its method works for you, no app on this page will beat it. Its strengths are real.

  • A proven method for paying down debt
  • Sharing one budget with family members

The picks

Pockita

Pick it if you want to log spending in seconds on your phone and never connect a bank.

If the weekly YNAB session is the part you dropped, Pockita asks for a few seconds when you spend and an optional short read once a month. YNAB’s Siri help article lists set phrases such as "Add new transaction in YNAB", while Pockita’s voice add lets you say a purchase in your own words and fills in the amount, merchant and category. There is no method to learn and no bank to connect. You give up zero-based budgeting, shared budgets, a web version and YNAB’s age of money view.

Goodbudget

Pick it if you like the envelope method and want a free plan you can share.

Goodbudget keeps the envelope idea behind YNAB with less ceremony. Its free plan covers 20 envelopes, 1 account and 2 devices, and the paid plan is $10 a month or $80 a year. Sharing means one login used on each device, where YNAB Together gives everyone their own.

EveryDollar

Pick it if you want a free zero-based budget and are happy typing transactions in.

EveryDollar is zero-based budgeting from Ramsey Solutions, with a free version if you are happy typing transactions in. Premium adds bank sync and costs $17.99 a month or $79.99 a year.

Monarch Money

Pick it if you want every account synced into one dashboard you share with a partner.

Monarch is the pick if you want bank sync and household sharing without a method to follow. It is $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year, against YNAB’s $14.99 a month or $109 a year, and leans on a web dashboard.

Switching from YNAB to Pockita

  1. Export your YNAB transactions to a CSV file from the web app, so you keep a record. Pockita starts fresh rather than importing it.
  2. Trim your categories. If your YNAB plan has many narrow ones, group them into the 8 to 15 you actually look at.
  3. Set monthly limits instead of assigning every dollar. The "give every dollar a job" habit does not carry over directly.
  4. Run both for a week and compare totals before you cancel YNAB.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best YNAB alternative?

It depends on what you want to keep. For envelopes with less ceremony, Goodbudget. For zero-based budgeting with a free version, EveryDollar. For bank sync and a dashboard without a method, Monarch Money. For quick phone logging with no bank connection, Pockita.

Is there a free alternative to YNAB?

Yes. EveryDollar has a free version with manual entry, and Goodbudget has a free plan with 20 envelopes, 1 account and 2 devices. Pockita is not free: it is $9.99 a month after a 7-day free trial, or $39.99 once for lifetime access.

Is there a YNAB alternative without the four rules?

Monarch Money and Pockita both skip the method. Monarch builds budgets around synced accounts. Pockita has you log spending in a few seconds and sends an optional summary once a month.

Which YNAB alternative costs the least?

The free plans of EveryDollar and Goodbudget cost nothing if you enter transactions yourself. Among paid options, EveryDollar Premium is $79.99 a year and Goodbudget is $80 a year, against YNAB’s $109. Pockita is $39.99 once for lifetime access.

Can I move my YNAB budget to another app?

YNAB lets you export your budget and transactions as CSV files from the web app. Pockita does not import them, so the simplest way to switch is to start fresh from the first of a month and rebuild only the categories you use.
